Old Cinema Site Filwood Broadway construction update June 2026

Stepnell construction is collaborating with Bristol City Council (BCC) on the Filwood Broadway Housing Development. This project is designed to create a vibrant, mixed use community development by bringing together much-needed affordable homes and local businesses in one location.

Located on and around the site of the Old Cinema on Filwood Broadway, the development consists of 30 properties, comprising 24 social rent homes and 6 shared ownership opportunities. The development includes new purpose-built retail units intended to revitalise the high street.

Construction update

With the regeneration project reaching several major milestones. Stepnell has started dismantling the scaffolding on the first housing block, revealing the primary structure of the new homes. Meanwhile, the zinc cladding has begun on the first apartment block, along with internal works well underway. The development is rapidly transforming , with works underway on the outdoor spaces. Groundwork for the gardens at Block Terrace 2 has kicked off, which required relocating the site welfare facilities to clear the way for these new green areas.

The next phase and expected completion date

The final finishes on the first two plots, bringing these affordable homes one step closer to scheduled completion in Autumn 2026.

Considerate Construction

Stepnell hope that local residents have not been too inconvenienced by traffic to and from the construction site.

Due to very wet weather in the spring, some mud was tracked onto surrounding roads – Stepnell are paying for regular road-sweepers to mitigate the issue and have purchased a jet-wash to tackle the problem before lorries and forklifts leave site.

Construction sites are sometimes very noisy, any works that could cause a disturbance is restricted to take place after 8am. Stepnell are members of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, find out more about this project by visiting: Stephnell.

Stepnell’s Filwood project team passed their latest audit for the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) with an impressive 45-point ‘Excellent’ rating. The CCS audit is an independent assessment that measures performance against a Code of Considerate Practice. It focuses on how construction sites respect the local community, care for the environment, and value their workforce, with top scores determining eligibility for national awards.

Community Activities

Stepnell have given up their free time to engage in a range of community-based activities that include volunteering days, site visits for construction students, careers events for school students, and tree planting. The latest campaign is arranging for clothes to be donated to the Save the Children Charity.

Defibrillator

Reminder for the local community around the Filwood Broadway site to know that a site defibrillator is located in the site office and is accessible during work hours.

Minimising Waste

Waste segregation and recycling are fundamental to company’s ethics. This involves separating core building materials – such as timber, plasterboard, and metal, on- site for recycling. Stepnell provide dedicated collection points for recycling damaged or unusable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and electrical batteries. Rainwater is harvest for cleaning tools and machinery.

Mental Health

Workers and contractors working on the Filwood Broadway site, were able to take part in Mental Health Awareness Training. A recent report found that 83 per cent of UK construction workers have struggled with mental health issues. Stress, anxiety, and depression are rampant within the industry, with 97% of workers experiencing stress and 87% suffering from anxiety. Workers grappling with stress or depression are more likely to be distracted and make mistakes increasing the risk of accidents in an already high-risk environment. A growing number of construction companies, charities, and industry bodies are taking proactive steps to tackle this crisis head-on.
