CIL Funding – find out more
Do you have an idea for improving your local community that needs funding?
New benches, extra trees or planters, or a new pocket park.
Is there a road that might benefit from a new crossing or traffic calming?
A community building that needs improvement.
These are the kinds of projects that could be funded through CIL funding (Community Infrastructure Levy).
What is Community Infrastructure Levy?
CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy) is a planning charge for developments in an area. Money that is paid to Bristol City Council by developers, when they build new houses and buildings. Most CIL money goes towards citywide infrastructure projects such as road improvements, but some of the funding is allocated to Council Area Committees to distribute.
Area Committees use the funds to prioritise what local people want and need in their area. It is a year-long process that involves talking to the community and generating ideas, applying for funding and prioritising local projects.

Filwood (see below for Ward map)
Filwood Councillors Cllr Rob Logan and Cllr Lisa Durston will be working with residents and locals groups and organisations on CIL funding. Residents and organisations can put forward suggestions for projects, that meet the CIL criteria in order to apply for funding. Previously, CIL has funded improvements to community spaces, including new boilers to community buildings. It has funded planters and benches. CIL funded the crazy golf course in Filwood Community Centre.
More information about Area Committees can be found on Bristol City Council website.

Area Committees local workshops
Bristol has nine Area Committees, each made up of several council wards. Local councillors from each Area
Committee meet to make decisions on improvements in their area and how CIL money is spent.
Bristol City Council CIL team are organising an event for local residents, organisations and groups based in Area Committee 7 (Area Committee 7: Southville, Bedminster, Windmill Hill and Filwood). The purpose of the workshop/meeting is to create spaces to bring local people, council officers, and councillors together to explore ideas and suggestions for how CIL funding could be spent.
There will be discussions to understand local needs and ideas, with council officers present to provide expert advice. Officers from key departments involved in the CIL process will be available to discuss projects ideas that involve public land. This will help in understanding suggestions and what may be possible, this supports applications and the process.
The workshop for Area Committee 7, Filwood Ward, is 17th March 2026 at Windmill Hill City Farm from 5-7pm
The workshop for Area Committee 9 Knowle Ward – 23 February, 5pm to 7pm at The Park Centre, Daventry Road, BS4 1DQ
Your voice matters
Your local councillors wants want to hear from you. Community voice and views are really important to this process. Tell your councillors what you would like to see funded locally. It must be something that benefits the community and is accessible to the community. Parks, street improvements or community space improvements.
Examples how CIL has been spent previously in South Bristol
Crazy Golf at Filwood Community Centre. Improvements to play equipment at the Hideout in Hartcliffe. Improvements to Whitchurch library outside space including benches. Knowle and District Community Association Building Upgrades.
