Simon’s cycling to Land’s End for charity

Local resident Simon Foster will be setting off on a gruelling bike ride from Filwood Community Centre to Land’s End in June – to raise money for Cancer Research.

The father of seven will be cycling 235 miles in eight days on his own, averaging 35 miles a day. He will also be pulling a bike trailer containing his tent, sleeping bag and spare bike kit as well as food and essential supplies.

He decided to do the challenge after seeing a lot of family members and friends diagnosed with or passing away from cancer.

Simon (37) a cleaner says: “A work colleague and very good friend was diagnosed with cancer to the brain at age 28 in December 2015.

“After several months of treatment and well in remission he was sadly told August 2019 he will have to start treatment again. When we were sitting in an office one day chatting, I said ‘I will ride to Land’s End for Cancer Research UK.’ And it started from there.”

Simon has already taken part in the 200 mile September Challenge for Cancer Research last year. His other fundraising includes shaving his head for Macmillan Cancer Support’s Brave the Shave in 2017.

And with a keen interest in health and fitness from an early age – as a teenager he helped design the Health Park gates with six others from the Knowle West Youth Team.

He has been preparing for his challenge this summer by going to the gym and taking long bike rides through the countryside to places such as Bath, Clevedon and Chew Valley Lake as well as regular trips across Bristol.

He adds: “The difficulty depends on the wind direction and the heat – if you get a hot June it can be a very long day as there are a lot of hills and there’s no support team. A worse scenario is a very wet day and you have to keep riding.”

Simon says the first thing he will do when he reaches Land’s End is “call my seven kids and then friends and family and tell them that I have completed my challenge”. And he intends to take a well-earned rest at a local holiday park on the final weekend.

“I will feel a sense of achievement at the end – and I just want to raise as much money as I can.”

Simon will be leaving Filwood Community Centre on 6 June at 10am and hopes to arrive at Land’s End at 10am on 13 June.
