Shared Reading groups are increasing in popularity across Bristol – with a new weekly session just started at The Park Centre in Knowle West.
Reading doesn’t always have to be a solitary experience – and those with a love of books are able to to meet other likeminded people within a relaxed and friendly group.
The free sessions are run by The Reader which now has over 600 groups across the UK – led by trained volunteer leaders.
The charity says Shared Reading groups aim to “bring people together and books to life” and can help tackle social isolation and increase wellbeing.
Community Engagement Lead for Bristol, Michael Prior explains: “Each week, the group leader will choose a story and poem to share with the group, who then read and listen to it and talk about what it means to them.
“It’s a great way to hear all kinds of new and unusual stories and try out new kinds of poems.”
Attendee Barry, says: “I try to come every week. You don’t need to know anything about books or writing – it really is for everyone.”
There are two groups in Knowle West running on Fridays: 10.30am -12pm at The Park Centre, Daventry Road BS4 1DQ and 11.30am – 1pm at Filwood Library on Filwood Broadway.
