New greengrocers opening on Filwood Broadway

Much needed fresh fruit and vegetables will be sold in the area again

A new shop selling fresh fruit and vegetables as well as international products will be officially opening on Filwood Broadway this Monday (26 April).

Filwood International Mini Market will also be open for a sneak preview this Friday and Saturday – with the new sign and shopfront finished this week on the site of the former Bitz N’ Bobz secondhand shop.

The store – which will also sell a range of groceries – is owned by director Pola Akbar who decided to set it up on the Broadway after doing research in Knowle West.

Director Pola Akbar working on the shop in March this year.

He told The Knowledge: “I think the area needs one of these, I have been looking round to find these sorts of products and couldn’t find them, there is a definite need and I haven’t seen any fresh fruit and veg around here.

“The shop will be mostly fruit and veg, people have to travel out of the area to buy them at the moment…”

Although there are supermarkets at Imperial Park and fruit and vegetable shops in Knowle and Bedminster – a shop selling year round fresh produce in the heart of Knowle West has always been a common ask.

The last greengrocers on the Broadway, KWL Fruit and Vegetables, opened next to the hairdressers in May 2014 but closed in early 2016.

Fruit and vegetables also used to be sold on Melvin Square by The Flower Stall for 26 years – which moved to Leinster Avenue at the end of 2015. It later stopped selling them to concentrate on the floristry business – which is now online.

Pola says a canopy will be set up at the new shop by Monday – so a lot of the fresh produce can be displayed outside.

The minimarket will also be selling a mixture of international products ranging from English, Middle Eastern and Polish to Lithuanian and Turkish.

He says: “There will be all types of groceries, soft drinks and frozen foods. We will also have a PayPoint and Payzone for British Gas top up and bills and be an Amazon collection point…

“We will be COVID secure and give masks out for those who don’t have one. We look forward to welcoming people to buy products – and if there are things they want we don’t have, we can bring them in.

“I’ve been talking to people from Knowle West and they are really excited and interested and looking forward to seeing it.”

Local resident Patricia Bakos is the new shop manager who will be working in the store with Pola.

She says: “I’m happy to work here in my local area and to welcome people here.”

Residents welcome new shop on the Broadway

Residents have been pleased to see that the shop will be opening on Filwood Broadway.

Trisha Hooper (65) says: ” We certainly need something up here. I remember we had three supermarkets here and now we’ve got none…

“I will certainly look to see what they’ve got as it’s only a five minute walk for me.”

And Stewart Ferris (43) says: “It’s pretty good because similar shops round here don’t sell fruit and veg.

“It’ll be nice to see the fruit and veg outside. Years ago when you were a kid you could see the vibrant colours and would buy fruit because it was on display.

“My 14-year-old son is very excited about it as they will have the drinks and American candy – but also to have something round the corner.”

Stuart Ferris is one of many residents looking forward to the shop opening on his doorstep.

Filwood International Mini Market is based at 47 Filwood Broadway, BS4 1JL. It will be open seven days a week from 8am to 10pm.
