Make sure you’re registered to vote

Bristol City Council is urging residents to make sure they are registered to vote – to avoid being left off the electoral roll or having difficulty obtaining a bank account or credit.

Over 200,000 households in Bristol have been sent an important Electoral Register form to remind them to register.

Residents are required to check whether the information for their household is correct, make changes where necessary and respond online, by phone, text or post.

The electoral register is republished on 1 December every year and by law residents must compete and return the form. Failure to return the form can result in a fine of up to £1000 being issued even if the household has not experienced any change.

Yvonne Dawes, Head of Statutory Registration for Bristol City Council said: “Nearly 60% of households have already confirmed their details. It’s really important for remaining residents to respond at their earliest opportunity, so that we can ensure all details are correct and up-to-date.

“Both registering and updating your details only takes a few minutes and can be done very quickly online, by phone, text or post.

“Even though there is no planned election in Bristol until 2020 it is still really important to complete this form and return it to the council to stop further reminder letters. Not only does this register people to vote, the Electoral Register is used in applications for credit, bank accounts, mobile phone contracts and helping to combat fraud.”

New electors added to the form will be sent an invitation to register by post or email, if they provide one, so they can be added to the Electoral Register.

Alternatively they can register to vote online at

Anyone needing help to register online  can visit their local library or the council’s Citizen Service Point at 100 Temple Street.
