Football fans across Knowle West have been gearing up for England’s historic match against Italy at Wembley this Sunday evening.

For the first time in men’s football, the national team are European Championship finalists – and the game will be one of this country’s biggest ever sporting occasions.

It’s been fifty-five years since England has been in a major final – the much exalted World Cup win of 1966. And whether they win or lose on Sunday, The Three Lions already made history when they beat Denmark 2-1 on Wednesday.

Residents fly the flag

Throughout the Euro Championship local people have been flying the national flag with pride inside and outside their houses – and Torrington Avenue is one of the streets where residents have always united in their love of football.

They have become known for decorating their entire road during the last two World Cups – and the street has even featured in national newspapers.

This year has been no exception as once again the bunting stretches from neighbour to neighbour and flags adorn their houses – as well as plastic blow-up decorations in gardens.

“It’s definitely important to raise spirits”

Along with millions of Brits, people will be celebrating across the estate and gathering safely to watch the match.

Glyn Vale Shop will be offering free faceprinting for both adults and children on Sunday – with COVID measures in place – as well as decorating the shop.

Manager Akash Patel says: “It’s community spirit all the way. We’ve been in the community for 20 years and we’re the local shop and we’ve always done things in our area – and in times like this and the 55 years – no one has experienced something like this.

“With what’s going on at the moment it’s definitely important to raise spirits.”

The Knowledge website will be collecting photographs of people’s decorated homes and gardens to feature on the website to mark the occasion. You can post on Knowle West Alliance Facebook or email sue@kwmc.org.uk
