Join a traffic-free ‘Santa Cycle’ along the new South Bristol link

A mass participation Santa bike ride will be taking place this month to cycle the new South Bristol Link before it opens to traffic.

Members of the public are being invited to don their Santa outfits and be some of the first to cycle the route in this free family-friendly ride on Sunday 18 December. It is also hoped to break an unofficial World Record for cycling Santas.

The event starts from the Gatehouse Centre in Harcliffe and continues for 6.5km into Ashton Court. On part of the route participants will travel along the Festival Way cycle path  beside the A370 at Long Ashton.

On arrival at Ashton Court, Santas will be treated to a mince pie and drink – while listening to carols sung by a Welsh male-voiced choir. Children will be able to see deer being fed.

This event has been organised by Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd who are building the South Bristol Link.

Alun Griffiths’ Public Liaison Officer for the South West of England, Jim Aitken, who has organised the Santa Cycle with assistance from partners in North Somerset Council, Bristol City Council and Metrobus Travelwest said: “It’s a real team effort to arrange so many Santas to cycle safely along the 6.5km route and is the culmination of many months of planning to celebrate the cycle path that will benefit the region and close to the opening of the new road. It’s an opportunity to cycle along a new road before it is open to all traffic.”

He said there was no official world record held for cycling Santas according to the Guinness Book of records, so an “unofficial world record” is being attempted.

Mr Aitkin added: “Rome holds the highest number of cycling Santas of 300 in 2012. To date nearly over 700 Santas are registered for the Bristol event that will ride along the full length of the South Bristol Link Road…  The only requirement is that you are dressed as Santa.”

Alun Griffiths is still finishing the main construction works on the South Bristol Link from Bishopsworth through to Long Ashton and it is due to open in January.

The Santa Cycle will take place en Sunday 18 December at The Gatehouse Centre, Hareclive Road,  Hartcliffe BS13 9JN from 11am – 2pm with registration at 10am.
