Get involved in the Great British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean which launches today (March 17) is the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign.

The Great British Spring Clean and Great Big School Clean 2023 will run until April 2 – when you can pledge to pick up a bag or more of litter as an individuala group or as a school.

Now in its eighth year – the campaign is run by Keep Britain Tidy which says last year Litter Heroes across the country pledged to pick nearly half a million bags of litter – and this year the campaign will be focusing on the pride they have for their local community.

The organisation says: “Our new research reveals that more than 8.5 million adults in the UK have done litter-picking at least once in the past six months. That’s a million more people than watched the end of Happy Valley!

“We believe everyone deserves to live in a community they can be proud but, sadly, less than half of UK adults (43 per cent) currently agree that they feel proud of their community.

“The good news is that litter-picking is a simple action that anyone can do to make an immediate and visible difference to their area  – 85 per cent of those who took part in last year’s Great British Spring Clean reported that taking part made them feel more pride in their local area. And 74 per cent said it improved their mood too!..”

Metro Mayor Dan Norris said: “We are all sadly aware of litter on our streets and green spaces but until you start picking it up, you don’t realise just how much there is!

“Campaigns like Great British Spring Clean make a big difference to our planet, and region. I urge all Bristol locals to come together and join me in the fight against litter that spoils our environment and harms our animals – think the thousands of pieces of microplastic that make their way into the ocean poisoning the stunning sealife there.

We can stop this – one rubbish bag at a time. You will also be helping to make Bristol an even happier, healthier and more beautiful city to call home.”
