Sunflowers have been spreading happiness across Knowle West – and so far 50 awards have been given out to growers of these lofty plants.
She has been cycling around the area on her sunflower-decorated bike delivering awards for people to put in their windows.
She says: “People from all over Knowle West and even Bristol sent in nominations for neighbours.
“I kept some awards with me when I was out and about and when ever I saw a Gert Big Sunflower, I delivered an award.
“It’s been a really lovely way to connect with neighbours and share pride about where we live!
“Lots of people shared personal stories about their connections with sunflowers, nature, birds and their neighbours.”
The idea was also inspired by the Facebook group Gardening Friends of Filwood, run by community gardener Don Jones – which gave out seeds to the community in May and held a planting session on Filwood Broadway.
Residents of Bamfield Lodge Care Home in Hengrove were some of the happy recipients of one of the coveted awards from Claudia.
Activities Lead at Bamfield, Sally O’Doherty, says: “During what has been a very difficult time for us all, our residents have kept their spirits up by keeping busy, enjoying activities, planting seeds, gardening and connecting with the environment in whatever way they can.
“They were absolutely thrilled to receive the certificate for growing sunflowers, and it is now proudly on display in our front window.”
Resident Jenny Copeland (81) who comes from Knowle West says: “Growing sunflowers here this year has been a real joy and we were all tickled pink to receive the Gert Big Sunflower Award!” (Featured in main image).
