Downton Road is currently closed after fire fighters were called to reports of a property fire there today (August 9) at 10.54am.

On arrival, crews found a fire in a two-storey house and they rescued one adult and two dogs from the scene.

A spokesperson from Avon Fire and Rescue said: “…With all persons accounted for, and six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, crews used five high pressure hose reels and three 45mm jets to extinguish the fire.

“Also in use were three turntable ladders, thermal imaging cameras and small gear. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and fire investigators remain at the scene.”

Plumes of smoke from the fire were visible from the city centre and both fire fighters and Avon and Somerset Police are asking people to avoid the area.

PC Joe Iles tweeted at 11.16am: ” Ongoing incident on Downton Road, please avoid area and find alternative route.”

He then tweeted an hour later: “Thank you for your patience whilst @AvonFireRescue deal with a House Fire. We are in attendance with @swasFT and the road remains closed.”
