Door knocking and roadshow to help prepare for the Clean Air Zone

Bristol City Council workers will be continuing its campaign this month to help local people prepare for the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) in the autumn – with door knocking in Filwood on Tuesday (August 2).

The CAZ which has been delayed several times is being introduced at the end of November to help combat air pollution in the city – and to meet the government’s legal limits as quickly as possible.

The zone which covers the city centre and some surrounding areas will charge older and more polluting vehicles to enter and will be in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The charge does not apply to petrol vehicles made from 2006 onwards and diesel vehicles from 2015 onwards. The council is also offering loans and grants to help people switch to a cleaner vehicle or less polluting forms of transport.

The council has hosted several CAZ roadshows in July, and there are more opportunities to find out about the scheme on Wednesdays in August including door knocking in Filwood on Tuesday August 2 from 10am to 3pm.

Other events include the University of Bristol’s Tyndall Avenue sports hall between 9.30am and 2pm on August 17, Bristol Royal Infirmary’s Queens Building from 10am to 2pm on August 24, and at Morrisons in Hartcliffe between 11am and 3pm on August 31.

A council spokesperson said they had already carried out 45 engagement events and more are planned for communities closer to the launch date.

Travel advisors can help people check if they will be affected by the zone and signpost them to further support where needed as well as giving personalised travel advice and helping residents make the most of free active travel offers.

The local authority has made exceptions for those on low incomes and some of those operating small businesses within the city centre.

Full details about the Bristol CAZ can be found on the Clean Air for Bristol website. There is also a vehicle checker tool with which drivers can check whether they are likely to be stung by clean air charges around the UK.
