Former Filwood Cinema site

The continued patience of the local community while works progress is appreciated. Stepnell Construction are working hard to transform the former Filwood Cinema site into new homes, retail and community spaces. The development has reached an exciting new phase where the transformation of the site is now visible to everyone passing by. The skyline of the development has reached a major turning point, primary structures are now in place. Structural Completion: The main timber frames for all buildings are now fully complete. Moving Indoors: With the skeletons of the buildings finished, our focus has shifted inside where internal works are now well.

What’s coming up

Over the next few weeks, there will be a focus on making the buildings weatherproof and starting interior work.
Exterior Finishes: Brickwork is currently underway on both apartment blocks. The final stages of preparing the houses, with exterior cladding began in February. Roofing: pitched and flat roofs should fully completed soon.

Project highlights

Excellent CCS Audit: Stepnell completed thier second Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) audit and have achieved a perfect score of 45/45. Receiving “Excellent” (15/15) ratings across all three categories: Respecting the Community, Caring for the Environment and Valuing our Workforce.

Filwood Community Centre

Contractors: Bray & Slaughter. To ensure safety, temporary parking restrictions remain in place around the Community Centre, including the closure of a section of Barnstaple Road at the front of the site to separate the public from building work and to allow construction vehicles to enter and exit safely. These essential measures will stay in place for the duration of the project.

Construction Progress

The walls and roof structure of the new library and the front and rear extensions are near completion. These new structures demonstrate the large scale of additional community spaces being created. Good progress has been made with the re-roofing works to the areas of the existing building together with masonry repairs and the forming of the openings for the roof lights. The reroofing works are expected to be completed over the coming months.

A new electrical sub-station has also been constructed, and the main electrical supply has been installed in the building. Good progress has been made internally, including remodelling works and window installations. The
new electrical and mechanical installation has commenced in the main hall, and the first areas of new flooring have been installed.

Upcoming Activities

Over the coming months the roofing works to both the new areas and the existing building will be complete.
The cladding to the external walls on the new extensions will be progressed during the period together with the installation of windows to these areas. The structural steelwork within the existing building to support the new masonry facade on the front and rear extensions will be installed. New spaces in the building will start to take shape with the installation of new ceilings and partitions.
