A shop selling Afro-Caribbean food and goods has just celebrated its first year of trading in Knowle West.

Based on the site of the old butcher’s shop – Ola and Ola Foods on Filwood Broadway is run by residents Adeola Animashaun and husband Olawale, originally from Nigeria. They stock a huge range of exotic products – from palm oil and yams to okra and maize flour.

Adeola explains: “Business has really picked up over the year, it was a novelty when it first opened. Anybody who comes in and haven’t been here before is very curious and interested in what we have and some will pick up one or two things just to try them.

“We sell groundnuts, powdered milk and plantain as well as traditional sweet bread and sweet beans. I would say our biggest seller is the chicken and goat meat…”

Adeola (39) originally ran the business from her house part-time but gave up her day job to do it full time so she could “work locally and spend more time with her children”.

The couple now have customers coming from all over Bristol to visit the shop and they will also deliver to homes.

Ola and Ola Foods is based at 31 Filwood Broadway and open Monday to Friday from 10am-6pm and Saturdays from 11am-6pm. For more information call  0782 890 2709.
