“Sustainability and the environment agenda are very important in construction, where we are creating solutions through energy efficiency in buildings. Construction is about people and how we live – our environment, and how we build for our people. People will always need buildings and as our awareness of issues such as climate change increases, so does the appetite for a greener and more sustainable built environment. Through a career in construction it is possible to create legacies that are at the very heart of tomorrows society.”

The University of Nottingham’s Department of the Built Environment (SBE) teamed up with leading international construction materials company Saint-Gobain to create an energy efficient, zero carbon solar powered home which was one of the key attractions at the Ecobuild exhibition.

The Nottingham HOUSE (Home Optimising the Use of Solar Energy) has been designed and built by a team of students from the SBE as part of their entry into the first International Solar Decathlon Europe competition to design, build and operate Europe’s most attractive, effective and energy efficient zero carbon solar powered house. The finished house made its debut at Ecobuild en route to the final, which takes place in Madrid in June 2010.
