Plans are underway to breathe new life into Filwood Broadway – by creating a boulevard with planters and seating where local people can meet.
The Filwood Boulevard Project is the vision of Knowle West resident Don Jones who has set up a crowdfunding website to make the plans a reality. The group needs to raise £6,000 before 29 June.
Don told The Knowledge: “I came up with the idea just after Christmas when I was walking down Filwood Broadway and thinking that no-one will want to open up a business here as it’s too sad…
“I thought if we can get people to take ownership of their space and put some planters down… Why shouldn’t Filwood have a boulevard?”
Don says the idea has given people something to think about– and has definitely got local residents talking.
The Facebook page features impressions by artist Eli Hatleskog of what it could look like, including a canvas on the side of the old cinema where movies could be projected and planters in the centre of the Broadway where people can “stop and reflect and take time out of their busy lives.”
The Boulevard Project Group has been set up to think about different ways of improving the Broadway and creating the boulevard feel.
It is supported by some members of Knowle West Together – local organisations and individuals who want to create positive change in the area.
The group hopes that once completed Filwood Boulevard will be a “welcoming and beautiful environment where local people’s families and friends can meet to enjoy the beauty, relax and touch base with nature.” They also feel it would be a “wonderful place to host festivals and other outdoor celebrations”.
On Monday 19 June a group of young people from Streetspace helped tidy the area and painted the bollards along Filwood Broadway to add some colour to the street.
