Bristol’s second walk-through testing site has opened in Netham Park in Redfield – as part of a national programme to create better access for local people to get tested.
It follows the opening of the first walk-through site on 20 August, located in the car park of the Victoria Rooms, near the Triangle in the city centre.
There are currently also three drive-in testing centres in the region at Bristol Airport, Paulton Rovers Football Club and Locking Road car park in Weston Super Mare – as well as at Ashton Gate Football Club which is specifically for staff at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.
In a statement Bristol City Council said anyone who has coronavirus symptoms should book a free test on the NHS website or by calling 119.
People can choose to do a test at home, drive to a regional test centre or visit a local walk-through site. Results should arrive the next day.
The council has also advised people to cycle or walk to the Redfield site and not use public transport or a taxi. Visitors are also required to wear a face covering, including when going to and from the site, and should go home as soon as they have been tested.
Residents were concerned at the site being located on the Netham – a public park – and the fact they were given very little notice.
In a statement Bristol City Council said: “We appreciate some local residents are worried and we would usually try to speak to local communities in advance, however, the opening of tests centres is moving fast in the pandemic. If you live near a test centre, please do not worry, they offer no increased risk to local residents…”
The new site comes at a time when Bristol has had 1,526 reported coronavirus cases as of the evening of 3 September – which includes 41 cases over the past seven days.
Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees says: “Whilst we have noticed a slow rise in numbers, I want to reassure you that the numbers are still low and expected with the city opening up, and people returning from family visits or holidays…”
