Staff and customers have given their stamp of approval to the new-look Melvin Square Post Office – which re-opened today after a refurbishment costing over £100,000.
The modernised post office and store has now more than doubled in size, with a range of goods and easy access tills. It will also be open an extra 13 and a half hours a week and will no longer close at lunch times.
The post office has been run by the Patel family for the past 25 years who are delighted with their refurbishment which took nearly two months.
Manager Kevin Patel said: “It’s perfect, we now have a large space and a good shop. The community is great here, as soon as we opened today they came straight through. Some bits haven’t been completed yet in the shop fit.”
He said they had received help for the cost of the modernisation – which was over £100,000 – from the Post Office and Best One.
Best One Business Developer Shelagh Kelly who came to the opening said: “The respect the community has round here for the family is incredible and with the promotions they will do with Best One – the sales will just go up…”
Customer Lisa Court (38) from Knowle West said: “It’s amazing, I couldn’t wait for it to re-open. Before it was a little square and now it’s a great big space. You couldn’t wish for better people, I’ve been coming here for years.”
And resident Roland Gibbons (54) who had just done a shop said: “It’s brilliant how spacious it is, there are a lot of people behind the tills so there are no queues and there’s a variety of things in the shop.”
The post office will offer a range of services including Special Delivery, home shopping returns and banking cash deposits and withdrawals.
Customers will also be able to send funds abroad using Moneygram, pay bills, pre-order travel money and apply for travel insurance as well as top up mobile phones.
