Staffs and residents gathered at The Café at Knowle West Health Park to mark its first birthday this month.
Champagne corks popped at the celebration and the café also laid on a free afternoon tea for the community – including scones and sandwiches.
The Cafe is run by Bristol catering company Whisk Food Experiences Ltd., serving breakfast, lunch and snacks as well as hot and cold drinks. And many residents say it is not just a café – but has become a friendly hub for meeting people.
Adrian Smith, a 72-year-old local resident and enthusiastic customer said: “I come here almost every day for a cup of tea. The staff are very helpful and it’s good for meeting friends.”
Directors Mike Merelie and Evan Roberts who founded the business hosted the event to welcome the guests.
Evan told The Knowledge: “I’m absolutely delighted that we overcame so much to get here. At first I was worried because we were the first café (of its kind) opened in Knowle West, and at the same time a lot of pubs were closed … but we gradually gained our reputation and grabbed our foothold.”
And Mike agreed that the café’s popularity had increased since it’s opening in November 2011 – with over 200,000 cups of tea served and 10,000 eggs consumed.
He said: “Tea brings people together and the social aspect of the café is important. The fact it’s used for informal meetings and friends to connect – it feels like it’s becoming a bit of a club.”
