Bees & Trees Event

From Knowle West Media Centre

On Sunday 2nd October over 30 people descended upon Buried Treasure at The Park Local Opportunity Centre. Local food producers made delicious jam from locally picked elderberries and blackberries. Some made a beehive out of an old gym horse and local beekeepers came and gave us lots of info and advice about bees and honey. People were able to sign up to get their free fruit tree, have tours of Buried Treasure and buy locally grown fruit and veg.

What more could you ask for from a sunny Sunday afternoon?! A visitor said that her highlight was tasting honey on freshly made bread for the first time. It was one of the first time some of the Knowle West food producers have come together and work on joint projects. Artist in residence at Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC), Julie Myers, was present and was looking at how to visualise the data/ information that came from bee hives and local fruit trees.

In the  long term, KWMC hope to create something (maybe a bit like an ‘app’) to sit on the community website for people to view information about trees and bees (amongst many other things!) To find out more contact Misty on 0117 9030444.

Big Bike Sale

Need a bike?

Life Cycle will be holding its second big bike sale in Bristol on Wed, 20th April.

Life Cycle staff and volunteers will be in the  City Centre (by fountains, opposite the Hippodrome) from 8.30am.

We will have bikes for people of all ages and heights. Children’s bikes start at £10 and adult bikes are priced between £40 -£100.
Bikes are intended to help those on lower incomes to get cycling.

All the bikes are second-hand and have been refurbished in Bristol Prison.  The scheme aims to provide prisoners with interesting work whilst also teaching them useful skills.  Bikes are fixed by prisoners under supervision and then checked over by a Cytech qualified mechanic before being sold.

~Better still – anyone who buys a bike will be entitled to a £5 discount on one of our bike maintenance courses.

Got a bike you no longer want?

We will also be collecting unwanted bikes. If you have a bike in your shed you don’t want, please bring it to the City Centre and we’ll happily take it off your hands.  Alternatively, you can drop it off at The CREATE Centre, 9-5 weekdays or 10 –4 on Saturdays.

A powerful new exhibition by Nlarge, a group of local young photographers, opened in Central Bristol at the end of March.  Over the next few weeks it will tour to venues across the city including Knowle West’s own Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC).

Body Image is a series of personal portraits and photographs that express common attitudes to body image, including joy, positivity and introspection.  Please come along and support these young photographers in their fantastic work!

The exhibition was developed during Profound Media, a project at KWMC that aimed to give young people the opportunity to use digital technologies to represent their views on issues relevant to them. Nlarge are always keen to welcome new members.  They meet on Tuesdays, 6-8pm at Knowle West Media Centre.  For more information about the group please contact Chloe and for more information about the exhibition please contact Rachel.  Call KWMC on 0117 903 0444 or visit www.kwmc.org.uk.
