Bristol Smallholders
About Us Bristol Small holders first met in July 2004. The group was formed by a few people in South Bristol who were interested in growing their own food, however small their plot, and keeping livestock - anything from guinea pigs to goats! their main aim was to swap tips about gardening and animal husbandry, to support each other and to encourage their neighbours to rent local authority allotments. They reasoned that if the local allotments were under-used they were more likey to be turned into sites for new housing schemes.
In 2005 the group rented an allotment - it was shared by five of their members. It was used as a training plot for people wanting to learn new gardenng skills or imporove their existing ones. It also functioned as a demonstration of how an allotment could be worked, This encouraged two of the memnbers to take on their own plots the following year, and for another to create a productive container gatrden outside her flat in Central Bristol.
The Smallholders meet monthly, with the exception of August, in the BS4 area. They enjoy a variety of activities throughout the year - including wine making, crafts, listening to guest speakers and occasional trips out. They usually visit the North Somerset Agtricultutral Show at Wraxall, near Bistol, on May bank holiday. They hold their Annual General Meeting every April.
