This summer Filwood is getting fit – as a community festival encourages us to walk, cycle and exercise our way to a healthier lifestyle.
What’s it all about?
- Filwood Gets Fit is a fun community festival that will support us all to become more active, whatever our age and ability.
- From 7th – 12th July we’ll be celebrating the activities that are already happening in our area – from sports teams and walking groups to gardening and children’s clubs. Many groups will be offering free or reduced-price ‘taster’ sessions. We’ll be organising some special activities too…
- The event is being organised by Knowle West Together, a group of local organisations who are working together to improve our area.
Why should Filwood Get Fit?
Our physical health can have a big impact on our quality of life. According to the Council’s latest Quality of Life Survey (2012), levels of physical activity in Filwood are lower than the city average. The number of households with a smoker is higher than the city average too. We want to help to change that for the better – we hope that by doing something active we’ll all feel healthier and happier.
From 7 – 12 July, Filwood Gets Fit will celebrate the health activities already happening in the BS4 area – from sports teams and walking groups to gardening and children’s clubs. Many groups will be offering free or reduced-price ‘taster’ sessions.
The week will include some special activities, including a ‘Run to Knowle West’ on 8 July, where residents are challenged to scale the 96 steps behind Knowle West Health Park in unusual ways. There will also be a ‘Big Toddle’ for families and pre-school children on 11 July.
Filwood Gets Fit will conclude on 12 July with a ‘Dot to Dot’ walk linking venues across the community including Knowle West Health Park, The Park, Knowle West Media Centre, the Springfield allotments, and the Inns Court Centre.
Practical activities will take place at each venue from 10am including music-making, arts and crafts, led walks, bike ‘blinging’ and an all-ability cycle ride. Each venue will then lead a walk to Filwood Community Centre on Barnstaple Road, coming together at 12pm to form a giant procession down Filwood Broadway.
The event is being organized by Knowle West Together, a multi-agency group working to improve the lives of residents in Knowle West. For more information please Anita Pearce at Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill Neighbourhood Partnership on 0117 908 4248.
