Filwood Gets Fit!

What’s it all about?
Filwood Gets Fit is a fun community festival that will support us all to become more active, whatever our age and ability. From 7th – 12th July we’ll be celebrating the active groups, clubs and events that already exist in our area – and organizing some special activities too…

Filwood Gets Fit Children's Logo

There will be an opening event on Monday 7th July on the Novers steps (at the back of Knowle West Health Park) and a closing ceremony on Saturday 12th July to coincide with the annual summer fayre at Filwood Community Centre.

Throughout the week many sports teams, walking clubs and children’s groups will be holding extra ‘taster’ sessions.  Many sessions will be free and a full programme will be released nearer the time. Lots of local organisations are taking part, including Knowle West Health Park, The Park, Knowle West Media Centre, Filwood Community Centre, LinkAge and more.

Why should Filwood Get Fit?
Our physical health and mental wellbeing can have a big impact on our quality of life. According to the Council’s latest Quality of Life Survey (2012), levels of physical activity in the Filwood ward are lower than the city average and the number of households with a smoker are higher than the city average. We want to help to change that for the better. Filwood Gets Fit is just the start – we hope that by doing something active – from ‘low-impact’ activities like gardening or walking to organised sport or cycling – we’ll all feel healthier and happier.

Who’s involved?
The event is being organised and coordinated by Knowle West Together, a group of local organisations who are working together to improve our area. Children from local primary schools have created designs for a Filwood Gets Fit logo, which will be used to promote the week.  We received 55 designs and the three below were shortlisted. Congratulations to the designers: Ellis, Sophie and Courtney from Ilminster Avenue E-Act Academy!  Look out for the final logo around the area over the next few months – it will include elements from these three designs.

Where can I find out more?
The full programme of events will be posted on the Knowledge Online (www.knowlewest.co.uk) and distributed to venues, schools and organisations across the area.
