A Filwood film club which has been treating residents to showings of old movies for over a decade is looking for new members.
Silver Screen is a monthly group for over 50s – supported by Knowle West Media Centre – which runs from Novers Park Community Centre.
But to those who have been faithfully attending for the past 11 years, – the club is about more than just watching a film; giving them the chance to socialise over a cup of tea.
Volunteer organiser Karron Chaplin says: “The people who go love it so much we have had two anonymous donations for £200 and £50 to help keep it going…
“A lot of the people who come are the original members. They pick the films which can be anything from old musicals or cowboys to drama – but comedy is their favourite.
“We run once a month where they have tea, cakes, films, good company and time to be spoilt – and to meet friends for a catch up…
“We also provide information through speakers about local activities in the area, such as health and wellbeing or bills…”
Karron says the club has also provided a stepping stone for some new retirees into joining other things in the area.
Bill and Marion Davies who are also local walk leaders have been members since the beginning and say they think the club is “brilliant”.
A few years ago Bill (79) featured in The Knowledge for donating a projector when the club’s broke – he was so determined the group should keep going.
He says: “I love the company and I would tell anyone to try it once and come for a cup of tea and a chat and see a film.
“They can get picked up outside their door by the Mede Sprint and taken home – people just need to come and find out what it’s like. It is brilliant for social and getting people together and something everyone can do. It gets people out of the house…”
Silver Screen meets monthly on Tuesdays at Novers Park Community Association Social Club in Novers Park Road from 1.15pm The next sessions are: 17 July and 14 August. For more information contact Karron on 0117 907 7038/07760 849371.
