South Bristol Darkroom

We are pleased to announce the first community meeting which will be held on the 15th March at 4pm at Filwood Community Centre.

We welcome anyone who is interested in being involved in the future of the darkroom or those that are simply interested in hearing the plans for this new community facility.

Email your details to or feel free to ask us questions via our Facebook page or Twitter too (details below) if you want to know more details.

Filwood Community Centre, Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) and Community in Partnership (CIP) are working together to create the first community darkroom in South Bristol, something that the whole community can use and be proud of!  It will operate out of Filwood Community Centre and to be accessible to all ages and abilities.

A darkroom was open in the Community Centre for many successful years, until the digital craze swept through and use of the facility ground to a halt.    The old unused space has already been cleared out in anticipation of the re-opening and, while there is still lots left to do, we are aiming for the paint to be dry and the equipment to be repaired ready for the first community meeting on the 15th March 2012.

Workshops, drop in sessions and exhibitions plan to be organised in association with some of Bristol’s finest amateur and professional photographers.  There will be opportunities for everyone to come along and learn new skills, including individuals or groups with no previous experience of darkroom techniques.

A steering committee made up of local community members will manage the facility, supported by KWMC, with the aim of maintaining a sustainable facility on behalf of the whole community.

Without your help the project will not be a success.  If you are interested in hearing more about the project or becoming a member of the steering committee please contact us today and come along to our first meeting!
