Charity for elderly needs South Bristol volunteers

A charity dedicated to solving the problem of loneliness and isolation faced by elderly people is currently looking for volunteers of all ages in South Bristol.

Contact the Elderly is a national charity which aims to help elderly people overcome loneliness by setting up monthly tea party groups in the homes of local volunteers.

Helen Ker, Development Officer of Bristol, Bath and Somerset, said: ‘Isolation and loneliness in the older generation is a growing problem…and Sunday is the day that many of our older guests say is the worst. It’s amazing what a difference tea, cake and companionship can make.”

The charity is currently looking for more volunteers as it has a waiting list in South Bristol. Each group needs drivers, hosts and a coordinator to run – so that it can invite eight older guests to tea.

Demand for the service is so great the charity has tripled the number of groups across the region in the past two years. Currently it has 10 groups in Bristol – but only two based in the South.
