Mr Blacker (77) has been Secretary of Knowle West Baptist Church for over 40 years as well as governor of two schools. He is also a trustee of Filwood Hope and Community in Partnership – and was nominated for his work as a director of Knowle West Health Association.
But after receiving a nomination letter in April this year, he had no idea he would be successful explaining: “Lots of people get a nomination but only 13 or so actually win it.”
The award was presented to Mr Blacker and 14 others in May by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Peter Main.
Mr Blacker, who volunteered with his wife until she passed away last February, describes the award as being ‘just as much hers’ and says although she is not here to share it, ‘it is part of her too.’
And he says of his achievement: “ Looks like it’s not only the Queen who’ll be celebrating her 60 years of activity this year!”
